A KPI is comparable only when its counting rule stays fixed. For each one, state definition, numerator, denominator, period, data source and owner.
Calculate rates from operating records
Example: shipments with excursions / eligible traceable shipments. For record completeness, calculate logger reports read and reviewed / reports expected. Define the start and end events for alarm response time and track its distribution as well as its average.
Do not silently remove missing reports from the denominator; show the missing-record rate separately. Apply the same inclusion rule when comparing routes, carriers or periods.
In monthly review, record the change, recurring cause and action taken. Set targets from the organisation’s own history and assign an owner; targets that punish reporting excursions can encourage under-reporting.
