Lining a vehicle body with EPS or foam board can slow heat transfer through metal surfaces. The benefit is meaningful only when the distinction from a finished transport system is kept clear: EPS is an insulation component, not a cooling unit, cleanable inner surface, impact protection, door seal or load restraint.
Insulation and cooling are different
Board lining reduces heat transfer. Providing a suitable cold source or active unit and loading goods at their required starting temperature are separate requirements. Lining thickness alone does not show how many hours cargo will stay within its temperature limits on a route.
| Inspection area | Question to ask | What it does not prove alone |
|---|---|---|
| EPS and facing | Is the board exposed or protected by a compatible facing? | Automatic hygiene suitability for food or medicines |
| Joints and door | How are joints, door frame and seal checked? | That wall lining insulates the door opening |
| Condensation | How are water, drying and corrosion monitored behind the lining? | That condensation is inevitable or impossible on every route |
| Thermal bridges | What happens at sections, wheel arches, floor and roof penetrations? | That every body surface has the same performance |
| Usable load | What are post-lining dimensions, door clearance, mass and restraint? | That outside catalogue dimensions are usable volume |
Inspect facing, joints and condensation
The FAO food transportation guidance addresses effective cleaning, protection from contamination and maintenance of necessary transport conditions together. For a design using EPS, inspect how the finished facing and joints fulfil these functions, rather than relying on the foam's name.
The FAO food transportation guidance expects transport design to allow effective cleaning, protect food and packaging from contamination, and control and monitor conditions. It does not create an automatic EPS ban or vehicle product approval; facing suitability remains a question for the actual use and applicable rules.
Inspect the door, seal, threshold, roof penetrations, floor, wheel arches and body sections separately. Lining does not automatically solve these areas. Re-measure usable internal dimensions, door opening, lining and corner clearances and restraint space; calculate net volume and total mass with the actual load.
Add these questions to the quote and inspection note
- photos or a drawing of exposed faces, joints and the door frame
- compatibility of the facing with cleaning and low-temperature conditions
- how condensation, drying and corrosion risk will be monitored
- thermal bridges, usable internal dimensions, door clearance, total mass and restraint
- qualified bodybuilder's technical drawing, material information, measurement method and applicable approval scope
Ask the bodybuilder for the finished body section, joint and door details, lining-cleaning instructions and applicable inspection or approval scope as well as the board's data sheet. Adding lining later does not show that an existing test report covers the new construction; assess the change with the manufacturer and relevant competent body.
Compare a passive container conditionally. For a distribution task, a passive option can be assessed when goods are preconditioned and the container, cold source, load capacity, vehicle restraint, route and handling are validated. Transfer to another vehicle, cleaning and return must also fit the real workflow; a passive solution is not automatically better for every task.
Compare body lining and a closed container on the same route using product starting condition, cold-source preparation, openings, ambient exposure, usable volume, total mass, return and cleaning. Compare offers against the requirement to deliver the same quantity of goods under the same temperature conditions.
The passive eutectic container instead of a reefer in a panel van and hidden reefer insulation thickness and volume guides separate passive-container and usable-volume questions. GEBHARDT's Isotec TBX product page and technical PDF support product-specific container selection; they do not automatically approve EPS lining.
