A short journey to a biobank does not make storage conditions irrelevant. Specimen type, archive acceptance rules and a validated workflow form the transport plan.

File the protocol before dispatch

Obtain container type, packaging, target conditions, monitoring method and delivery window from the recipient in writing. If the specimen is classified as infectious, confirm which classification, packaging, labeling and documentation steps in WHO's current transport guidance apply to the shipment. Check that label, specimen code and dispatch form use the same identity; record the protocol revision.

Maintain handoff and measurement chain

At collection, courier handoff, transfer and archive receipt, record date and time, sender/receiver and seal condition. Link the monitoring device ID and relevant measurement file to the specimen.

Consult the recipient on deviations

If there is an alarm, delay, package damage or out-of-protocol reading, segregate the specimen and notify the archive owner. Let the recipient's protocol and authorized person decide acceptance, rejection or release from quarantine; do not generalize a temperature threshold or duration.
