Strawberries continue to respire after harvest and carry field heat. Lost quality cannot be restored later; suitable postharvest handling can help slow further loss. Do not assume one timing or temperature suits every variety and buyer.

For each lot, record harvest time, when it was shaded, and when cooling began. Measure product temperature with the same method in the field, after cooling, and before loading. The records show where waiting time increased.

Protect crates from sun, avoid stacking that blocks airflow, and include the buyer’s packaging and product-temperature requirements in the dispatch plan. An insulated container does not replace pre-cooling; validate the planned packout with the product.
