A GS1-compatible code does not by itself show where a container is in a pool. Define what the code identifies and which system records each scan event.

Choose identifier and carrier together. Decide whether to track each physical container or count only by model/type for pool accounting. Confirm the GS1 identification key and the barcode, two-dimensional symbol or RFID carrier with your solution partner; these are distinct choices. Document how an internal container number maps to the GS1 identity.

Trial the label under actual washing, abrasion and handling conditions. The code should scan without damage, retain a human-readable identifier, and avoid blocking a lid, cleaning area or safety marking.

Verify the scan event

On dispatch and return trials, match the scanned ID with quantity, time, location, sender and receiver, and container condition. Report duplicate or unreadable codes and movements missing from the record separately. Do not extend the label system until the pilot records reconcile.
