The first container-tracking decision is not tag technology, but which question needs an answer. Total stock, customer balances and an individual unit's maintenance history require different levels of detail.
Choose the identity level you need
To see total pool size, batch or shipment-level movement records may be enough. For a customer balance, match delivered and collected quantities to the customer. If you need usage or repair history for each container, assign each one a unique identity.
Set up event records before tags
Link the ID to the container type and scan or record dispatch, return, washing, damage, repair and retirement events. Capture the responsible person and event time too. If not every scan is counted, identify where manual reconciliation is needed.
Run a small test under real conditions
Test a barcode or RFID tag on one container type and route under actual washing, moisture, freezing and reading conditions. Measure unreadable tags, incorrect matches and time spent on manual correction. Expand only if the records improve counting and returns in practice.
