How to measure packaging waste in medicine logistics

Test waste-reduction claims against your own weighing and shipment records. First fix the period, shipment unit and included packaging types.

Measure per shipment

Weigh cartons, outer boxes, filler, cold sources and other materials by type; record amounts used separately from amounts actually discarded. Kg per shipment = total kg in the chosen scope / completed shipments in that same scope. Apply the same weighing method and tare convention consistently.

Do not count a reusable container as waste on every trip. Track returns, losses, cleaning and repairs by pool ID; compare single-use and reuse systems over the same route and period.

Test smaller packaging against product protection and shipment records under real loads. If damage or temperature excursions rise as waste falls, do not scale the change without product and quality-owner approval. Verify disposal method against the locally approved procedure.
