For a quick answer to how many pallets fit, classify the unit first, then measure the loaded footprint. Dry 20 ft and 40 ft, refrigerated containers and palletwide units do not share one floor layout. A general table starts a scenario; the shipping plan is completed with the actual unit drawing, measurements and load constraints.
Euro pallet reference for 20 and 40 ft dry containers
The following counts come from the iContainers planning guide. They assume 1200 × 800 mm pallets, no overhang and one floor tier. This company reference does not approve loading of the assigned container.
| Dry container | Euro pallet positions | Assumption |
|---|---|---|
| 20 ft standard | 11 | One floor tier, no overhang, efficient arrangement |
| 40 ft standard | 24-25 | One floor tier, no overhang, efficient arrangement |
Why assess reefers, palletwide and high cube separately?
In a reefer, insulation, refrigeration equipment and air distribution affect usable space. Palletwide equipment can offer a wider floor for Euro pallet layouts. Obtain the technical drawing for either type instead of transferring a standard dry-container count.
A high-cube option generally adds internal height; it does not create a new floor position or automatically authorise two tiers. Check product packaging, top clearance, crush resistance, forklift access and restraint method. A two-tier plan needs confirmation for the product, pallet, separator/rack and load security.
From dimensions to a loadable plan
Maximum gross mass and stacking data on the CSC safety plate do not replace an internal-dimensions drawing (CTU Code §8.2.1.2 and Annex 4). That stacking mass concerns containers stacked above the unit, not permission to double-stack pallets inside. Compare loaded pallet dimensions with the clear door and internal measurements.
A pallet fitting on the floor does not mean the load is ready for transport. Check total weight, axle/floor point loads, centre of gravity and restraint. Mark reefer floor channels on the actual drawing and record with a photo or sketch how pallet feet preserve the clearance required by unit instructions and the loading arrangement.
Quick pre-calculation
- record unit type and actual technical drawing
- measure loaded pallet footprint and package overhang
- try both pallet orientations and check clear door aperture
- verify single/two-tier loading separately against product and restraint conditions
- check volume, weight, axle/floor point load and airflow together
- approve the final plan with measurements, photos and a loading sketch
Use Euro pallet and container dimensions to collect measurements and the pallet-placement calculation to compare orientations.
