In logistics infusion solutions are often treated as outside the cold chain and handled loosely, yet room temperature is also a band, and a band can be breached at both ends. The limit depends on the product: for 0.9 percent sodium chloride infusion the product information says not above 25 °C and do not freeze, for mannitol infusion do not refrigerate or freeze.

RiskWhere it arisesWhat happens
FreezingWinter night, unheated store, open dockThe liquid expands, stressing bag and port
OverheatingSummer day, parked vehicle, sunlit dockThe upper limit is exceeded for long

These products are bulky and heavy, so they often wait on the dock or by the door, and their temperature is usually not recorded. If the alarm is set only on the upper limit, winter freezing goes unnoticed; set the logger two-sided, keep pallets off outside walls and doors, and write dock waiting time into the dispatch plan.

If freezing is suspected the bag is not used: the product is segregated, lot, time window, temperature profile and packaging condition are recorded, and a documented decision is taken from the quality lead. A bag with a leak is discarded, because according to the Viaflo mannitol product information sterility may be impaired; even a bag that looks intact needs the recorded assessment.
