A returnable container spends a large share of its life empty, so where it waits and in what state is tied to the records. An empty container is not automatically ready for reuse; at depot intake its cleanliness, dryness, lid and body are checked.
| Waiting place | Risk | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Customer | Loss, occupying the customer's space | Container ID, collection turn, waiting place |
| Own depot | Dirty and clean units get mixed | Status label: dirty, washed, damaged |
| On the way back | Falls outside the records | Loading and unloading record |
In the depot, empties get a fixed area and do not stand in aisles; washed and unwashed units are kept apart, with a low stack and lids open so no moisture stays and the bottom container is not crushed. GEBHARDT Isotec TBX can be cleaned by hand, with a pressure washer or in an automatic wash line, and its construction keeps water out of the insulation layer. Rivet and screw connections allow components to be replaced after minor damage, and a damaged unit waits in a separate area.
