Break-even is not a fixed rotation count for a reusable container. The result depends on returns, washing, maintenance, losses and empty-return costs as well as purchase price. Build the calculation from your own trip records.

Calculate both options for the same trip

For the single-use option, record packaging, coolant and disposal per trip. For the reusable option, add washing, maintenance, coolant preparation, return transport and the cost of losses or retirement. Include vehicle or fuel savings only when the operation truly changes and the difference is measured.

In a simple model, break-even trips equal the initial reusable-pool investment divided by the difference between single-use trip cost and reusable variable cost. The difference must be positive; otherwise the model shows no payback under those assumptions.

Keep initial pool size separate from trips per day. Containers in transit, awaiting return or in washing still tie up capital. Recalculate when observed returns, maintenance or route costs differ from the assumptions.
