EN 12830 defines the tests, performance and suitability of temperature recorders used in the transport, storage and distribution of temperature-sensitive goods. The 2018 edition replaced the 1999 one; it covers -80 °C to +85 °C, treats the whole recording system including its sensors, and adds requirements on protecting data from manipulation and on where the sensors sit.
When choosing a device, ask for the conformity declaration for the exact model and the edition it was assessed against; a datasheet assessed against an older edition cannot be compared one to one with a newer one. Check that the measuring range covers the regime you carry, how long the record is kept in the device and how it is exported.
Where the sensor sits depends on the container's interior; GEBHARDT lists the rail, shelf and tray options against body size.
In an insulated container there are two measurements: the air in the container and the load itself. The position of the sensor decides what the record represents. GEBHARDT points to the 4smartlogistics solution for recording lid openings and the temperature profile along the route.
If one vehicle carries two regimes, each regime gets its own record. A sensor that sends data to a phone does not make the device compliant; conformity belongs to the device itself. Keep device ID, declaration, edition, calibration information, sensor location and a sample data export together in one file.
