The quietest loss in a container fleet is units with sound bodies that no longer do their job: a roll container with a broken castor stands in a corner, a crate with a snapped latch cannot be stacked. Castors, hinges and latches wear out far sooner than the body; spares for those three are a small annual line, while new containers are a large one.
Write the threshold down in advance. For example, if the repair costs more than a third of a new unit and the body is cracked, the container is retired; below that it is repaired. You set the ratio from your own prices. Once it is written, the decision no longer depends on who happens to be in the warehouse that day.
Record which part comes back from which branch and how often. If broken castors cluster at one branch, the cause is that site's floor or handling, not the container.
