Who can review a carbon calculation reproducibly?

Short answer

Have someone other than the preparer recalculate the result from source documents using the same method version. Keep boundary, allocation, factor sources, gaps and workbook on file. Do not equate customer review with independent assurance; if external verification is required, check the requesting standard, programme or contract for scope and verifier competence criteria.

For a carbon calculation review, first clarify the type of assurance requested. Internal review, customer checks and independent verification have different scope and evidence needs.

A reproducible file

Keep raw fuel/distance/load data, factor sources and versions, method and boundary statement, allocation steps and calculation workbook together. Make periods and unit conversions traceable.

A second employee should recalculate sample lines and the total from the same inputs; record differences, missing data and corrections in the review log. Prepare boundary and assumption notes for customer questions.

If independent assurance is requested, verify the boundary, reporting period and verifier competence criteria in the contract or programme rules. Do not assume the level or requirement before these terms are clear.
