After flooding, open separate decision records for food lots and equipment. Appearance, sealed packaging or a dry outer surface alone does not prove fitness for use. CDC consumer guidance advises discarding food that may have contacted floodwater, while describing a separate cleaning procedure for commercial hermetically sealed cans and retort pouches. That procedure is not automatic release of a commercial lot.
Make the area safe first
Do not enter a flooded area or approach electrical equipment until authorised personnel approve it. Then segregate affected products; photograph lot, pack integrity, water type and contact. Do not guess at release or disposal.
Assess product and equipment separately
Give the quality owner the records and product specification; link the decision and reason to the lot. Have containers, castors, seals and electrical parts checked under maker maintenance procedures. Record authorised approval and checks before return to service after cleaning.
