One average can hide extreme runs and measurement coverage; a short report is clearer with a distribution and denominator.
Three visible facts
- The median or a defined measure of center.
- Run counts in bands and the longest relevant deviation.
- Eligible runs reviewed, missing records and coverage.
Why show them together
The center shows a typical value, the extreme an exception, and the denominator how many runs are represented.
Define the bands
Set duration or temperature bands in advance according to product requirements and site criteria; keep thresholds consistent across reports.
Period comparison
Place the prior period beside it using the same route, regime, band and eligible run definition.
State when coverage differs; when run counts change, do not compare raw band counts alone.
Action line
Record the observed difference, measure to follow, owner and review date.
A report summarizes observations :: Showing distribution and coverage together makes interpretation testable.
Supporting detail. Keep source files, missing records and measurement definitions in an appendix; refer product decisions to the authorized quality process.
One page example
| Measure | Value to report | Coverage beside it |
|---|---|---|
| Center | Median or defined center | Eligible run count |
| Distribution | Runs in each band | Total eligible runs |
| Extreme | Longest relevant deviation | Measurement and record coverage |
