A goods delivery without a signature and an empty-container return are separate events. Recording and acceptance methods depend on the contract, application and site procedure.

Separate the two movements first. Complete the goods delivery note and asset inventory record separately so a gap in one does not obscure the other.

Identify the return

Record container ID, quantity, time, person handing over or carrying it, and destination.

State why there is no signature

Describe the observed situation, such as no authorised recipient, an application issue or refusal to sign; do not invent a reason.

Use agreed alternative evidence

Attach an app event, photo, dispatch record or office confirmation if accepted by the contract or SOP.

Keep custody visible. If the courier retains the container, link it to the return record; if left with the recipient, identify who received it.

If documentation is incomplete

The courier should ask dispatch for instructions and record the event and the container's current location until resolved.

Signature format is not universal; the parties' agreed process defines acceptable evidence.
