At night, the quality officer who would decide may be unreachable. Record the shipment condition, readings and pending decision together.

What happens at night

  1. Check the site's SOP for the temporary location.
  2. Follow its segregation and labeling steps.
  3. Record the reading, time and container condition.
  4. Send written notice to the named contact.

Why the decision can wait

Use the SOP to distinguish a hold from a release. Do not assume authority the night team was not given.

The phone chain has to be written

Keep contacts and numbers on file in advance. If the first person is unavailable, try the next approved contact.

Where the goods go

Check the procedure for an accessible suitable area and label method. Notify the responsible person if none is available.

The morning handover

Write the shipment, reading, product location and pending decision in the shift handover.

How far the night team's authority runs

Check written SOP authority for stopping, segregating and releasing goods; do not assume one limit fits every site.

The first half hour of the morning

Pass open records to the morning lead. Name the decision owner and next step in the handover.
