Wheeled containers move with different loads, wheels and routes. Decide whether to push or pull using the instructions for the model and the workplace risk assessment, not habit.
Pushing
Assess visibility and starting/stopping effort with floor, load, wheels and handle.
Pulling
Compare handle, visibility, brake, castor and floor slope with model instructions and site assessment.
The route affects the decision
- Straight aisle: check manual and risk assessment.
- Corner/doorway: record visibility and clearance.
- Slope/ramp: verify permitted conditions.
- Difficulty: stop and notify the supervisor.
Container height and visibility
If the load blocks view, ask an authorised person to review the route and setup.
Floor and wheels
Record and report floor or wheel issues; follow procedure and maker instructions on continued use.
Before deciding, assess the same container, load and route together; one push-pull rule does not suit every setup.
The container's handles
Confirm the force point in the manual; the lid or lock panel may not be a handle.
Speed and control
Set speed under site procedure and model instructions. If stopping is difficult, stop and report.
