Identify and segregate a container with detected odour before assigning it to another product flow. Use records to find the previous load, receipt and wash times, cleaning agent, and drying method.
Inspect the inner surface, joints, lid, and gasket for visible residue, damage, or cleaning difficulty. Add findings to a photo and checklist; do not diagnose material failure or a microbiological cause from odour alone.
Do not guess wash temperature, chemical, contact time, or compatibility. Check the container's use and cleaning instructions, chemical label, and validated site procedure; train staff to follow them.
If odour remains after the approved cleaning step, keep the container segregated for quality review. Document any return to service, repair, or retirement according to procedure.
