Do not limit the folding versus rigid crate choice to unit price. Measure the space empty crates occupy in return transport and storage under your working conditions.
Trial the empty return
Stack both models in the same vehicle using the same loading method. Record the number that fits, floor area used and restraint arrangement.
Compare rigid crates fairly. If a nestable model is available, trial it too. Follow the maker's stacking instructions and check how many can be carried safely and stably.
Count hidden costs
Record folding and opening time, damaged hinges or latches, extra handling and floor space used in storage. Assigning the folding task to a shift owner is part of the workflow.
Decide for the route
Use the same period to record return distance, trips returning empty and crate quantity. Put actual vehicle load and labour data in the cost comparison; less volume is not automatically a saving.
A short local loop and a longer return route can differ; verify the choice with repeated loading trials on the actual route.
