A container-variety decision cannot be made from the total SKU count alone. First identify which product or customer need each type serves.

Bring usage records into one view

For a chosen review period, record dispatch count, quantity and customer for each type. Add container dimensions, base module, washing arrangement, storage space and customer requirements.

Find types that may substitute for one another

Group containers with compatible bases and washing flow as candidates. Check whether different heights affect product protection or stacking. ISO 3394 and ISO 18616-1 provide context on modules and reusable containers; they do not automatically define every need in your operation.

Test with a pilot first

Instead of immediately retiring a little-used type, run a limited shipment with the proposed replacement. Record load fit, pallet fill, washing flow and customer acceptance. Review the result on repeat orders before deciding on the SKU.
