Whether ice can replace a plate depends on product and transport requirements; there is no universal substitution rule.

Check product and packaging

Review product instructions, packaging resistance to water, label legibility and receiver acceptance requirements.

Confirm from the relevant product procedure whether direct contact with ice is permitted.

Drainage and hygiene

Check equipment drainage design and where meltwater goes in actual use. Cleaning method and ice source must follow site procedures.

If using a plate, follow model instructions for hardware, separation and conditioning.

Run a comparative trial. With representative product and route, record product readings, packaging condition, pooled water and handling steps for each arrangement.

Assess results with quality against receiver criteria using the same limits and measurement method.

Do not change a product-contact cooling method until suitability is demonstrated.

Keep the decision with a file that evaluates product, route, container and hygiene procedure together.
