The actual cost of a chilled parcel is more than its freight line. Compare single-use packaging, coolant and returnable-container costs per shipment. Rates and acceptance rules vary by carrier.
Put quote and invoice on the same sheet. Measure outer dimensions and gross weight. Ask the carrier for its volumetric divisor, chargeable-weight rule and separate lines for fuel, cold service, dry ice or remote areas. Compare quote values with the final invoice.
Single-use cost per shipment = packaging + coolant + freight + surcharges. Do not assume a price or acceptance rule for dry ice or special service; confirm from the quote and carrier instructions.
Compare returnable packaging fairly
For a returnable option, divide container cost by expected uses, then add washing, reverse freight, tracking and loss costs. Compare cost per shipment and choose the smallest container that meets the product's measured temperature range. Hypothetical example: if single-use totals 100 units, container amortization is 40 and return plus washing is 35, the returnable total is 75 units. These invented units only demonstrate the formula.
Recalculate with a month's actual invoices and return records. The result changes if use falls or returns are delayed.
