There is no calendar-based universal sign of a wrong equipment choice. Measure mismatch through recurring gaps between task requirements and actual use.
Track four indicators
Number and cost of add-ons bought for the same task
Count of non-standard ties, supports or other workarounds
Recurring symptoms or parts in fault/service records
Days and units left unused
Completed tasks per equipment unit
Which shift, route or load type produces a recurrence
Share of add-on and service costs assigned to the asset ID
Record each event. Add asset/work-order ID, date, task, user and expected versus actual result. Photograph how and when a workaround is used.
Choose tasks or uses as the denominator and calculate consistently across periods.
Separate the causes. Is an add-on operationally required or correcting a gap in the chosen configuration? Compare the request with shift volume and site conditions, then confirm the rationale with the owner.
If task scope changed later, record that separately from an equipment fault.
Review recurrence. If adaptation or non-use repeats for the same task, review the specification with purchasing, operations and maintenance. A single fault does not prove a wrong choice.
Note the review date and the evidence used for the decision.
Next decision
Add the measured gap, frequency of use and service/accessory costs to the next offer comparison. Correct the evidenced mismatch; do not automatically replace the whole fleet.
Pilot current and alternative arrangements against the same task description.
This count is an early warning, not a substitute for equipment safety or suitability decisions.
Recording observations promptly makes task and equipment links clearer than reconstructing them months later.
