A search engine puts two unrelated ATPs on the same page. In biology, ATP is adenosine triphosphate, the energy carrier of the cell. In transport it is the agreement on the international carriage of perishable foodstuffs and on the special equipment used for such carriage, signed in Geneva on 1 September 1970. If the text around it mentions a class, a certificate or an inspection, the subject is transport.
The agreement sets the temperature at which each type of perishable food travels and how equipment proves it can hold that temperature. The body is tested and the result becomes a mark painted on the body.
| Mark | Meaning |
|---|---|
| IN | Normal insulation, K at most 0.70 W/m²·°C |
| IR | Heavy insulation, K at most 0.40 W/m²·°C |
| FRC | Heavy insulation plus a refrigeration unit, inside temperature selectable between +12 and -20 °C |
In Türkiye the rule reaches domestic work as well. Article 5 of the Turkish regulation on special equipment for perishable food requires either an ATP certificate of compliance or a Perishable Food Transport Certificate. The second is issued to older vehicles that cannot meet ATP and is valid only at home and for trips to countries outside the agreement.
The container and the vehicle are assessed separately. GEBHARDT Isotec containers are ATP and HACCP certified, so the insulation of the container itself has been measured.
