Colour coding is a visual cue when it has a shared meaning and verification step; it does not identify a container by itself. First define the operational decision it should support.

Fix the colour key

Assign each colour one meaning, such as product group, route or status. Add the key to work instructions and pair colour with a container ID or readable text.

Run a field trial

With workers from different shifts, trial picking, loading, handover and return scenarios under actual lighting, distance and soiling conditions. Observe whether the right container is selected, the label can be read and the record is linked to the correct status.

Count and document confused colours, wrong picks or faded marks with examples. Change the key or label format and repeat the trial; compare errors and rework rather than assuming a speed gain.
