For a cold load, choosing a pallet or roll container is not just the first movement time in the warehouse. Check the delivery dock and doorway, how the load is unloaded, what the operator can move safely and how long the vehicle door stays open. A roll container is a handling unit, not insulation or a cooling system.

Check the delivery point first

The quote should cover tail-lift or dock capacity, slope, surface, threshold, door width, turning space, caster brakes and the restraint that holds the load. If there is no forklift, do not assume the pallet cannot enter; check the pallet truck, ramp and surface together. A roll container is not automatically safe or equipment-free on a slope or poor surface.

The UK's HSE roll-cage and wheeled-rack guidance covers practical risks such as tipping on ramps, crushing, falling from a tail lift, keeping the load line and operator view clear. Where cold-room or wash use is expected, check that casters, bearings, brakes and contact surfaces suit cold, water and the maintenance routine; this is practical guidance, not Turkish law.

Measure movement and unloading time

Do not measure only the moment the truck door opens. The cycle includes unloading, crossing the dock or threshold, entering through the door, reaching storage and closing the door again. Record operator count, hand-push distance, safe stopping points and waiting separately. Records from the same delivery point with comparable loads show whether the delay occurs during unloading or movement inside the store.

Define cold protection as a separate system

A roll container is not insulated by itself. A thermal cover or insulated container limits heat transfer; neither generates refrigeration. Specify any cold source and preparation separately from the product starting temperature and route conditions. Test product starting condition, target, ambient exposure, dwell, lid or cover openings and preparation in the actual loading layout. “Short distance” alone is not proof; cover performance is not identical for every product and load.

  • tail-lift or ramp capacity, slope, threshold and floor condition
  • door clearance, turning space, caster brakes and load-restraint method
  • actual carton envelope, total mass, usable base or shelf and operator count
  • product starting condition, cold source, cover or container loading arrangement
  • whether the nesting or folding model actually suits this load
  • owner of cleaning, drying, damage and reuse records

Nesting or folding is not the same for every roll model; a catalogue statement does not guarantee empty-return volume. Verify open and closed dimensions, caster and brake behaviour under load, cleaning access and the return route together. Record how many empty units return, their closed and open dimensions, nesting order and vehicle space.

The FAO food transportation hygiene guidance expects transport design to allow cleaning, protect food and packaging from contamination and control conditions. It does not automatically approve or prohibit roll containers; assess cleaning, drying and contact surfaces with the actual load.

GEBHARDT's Isotec TBX product page provides product context for an insulated container; it does not insulate the roll container itself. If a container or cover is used, validate the goods, container or cover and cold-source arrangement in the same loading layout.

Use pallet or case for store delivery, roll containers for store delivery and the empty-return calculation guides together. Keep delivery site, door-to-storage time, empty-unit dimensions, cleaning and operator records in one worksheet.
