A cold-chain box is an insulated container that separates temperature-sensitive goods from ambient conditions during transport; it can be rigid, soft, single-use or returnable. Insulation slows heat exchange, and coolants such as eutectic plates or gel packs add cold capacity to the system.

The GEBHARDT Isotec TBX is one example of this arrangement: no electricity or compressor is needed, pre-frozen eutectic plates supply the cold and the insulation keeps it, and the container is pre-cooled to the goods' temperature for at least 6 hours. GEBHARDT eutectic plates hold the cold chain for up to 24 hours; the real time is worked out for the route from the product, the ambient temperature and the number of plates.

The box does not bring warm goods down to target temperature by itself and does not remove the need for records. For selection, write down the permitted product range, the payload, the worst route and how the container returns.
