A caravan fridge is sized for small volume and low consumption; it falls short as the trip and the party grow. A bigger fridge draws more current, the current comes from the battery, and if any link of that chain falls short the fridge stops overnight. Add the volume without touching the electrical line: put an insulated box and pre-frozen plates beside the fridge.
| Use | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| Opened often during the day | Fridge |
| Needed in two days | Insulated box |
| Frozen stock | Box, with low-melting-point plates |
| Drinks | Separate, often-opened compartment |
Frequent opening is where most of the loss occurs; keeping often-used items in a separate compartment leaves the main door shut. Hold the fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or below, checked with an appliance thermometer, and do not overpack it so air can circulate.
Place the box in the coolest corner of the vehicle, close to the floor, and secure it; a box that moves under braking is a hazard. If the plates cannot be prepared the box only insulates and the hours shorten. Collect the meltwater, since standing water brings odour and mould.
