A code on a cooling unit is a model-specific symptom and severity signal, not a diagnosis from a generic internet list. The unit may appear to run while capacity is reduced. The first five minutes are for safety, product condition, records and decision ownership, not changing parts. This is an initial-response guide, not a safe waiting allowance or a promise of diagnosis within five minutes.

Establish the first record and safety

Move the vehicle to a safe place, follow vehicle and unit warnings for moving or electrical parts, and open the model manual's safety section. Do not open covers, touch connections, approach hot surfaces or attempt a field repair; wait for authorised service instructions.

A unit being on does not prove that cooling is working. Return air represents one air point in the body and does not replace the product's core or package condition. Keep product measurement, independent logger, setpoint, ambient conditions and last known good record as separate fields.

Keep unnecessary door openings to a minimum to limit heat entry. If inspection or essential handling requires opening, add the time, reason and duration to the incident record.

Confirm the model and alarm source

Put make, model, serial number, exact code, alarm time, unit status and the manual's alarm description in the service record. Similar-looking codes can have different severity on different models.

In the Thermo King Precedent manual, a zone-specific shutdown can stop the affected zone while others continue (April 2022, p. 114). Record the affected zone, not just whether the unit is running.

Fill level cannot establish safe remaining hours. Review the product's temperature history, current readings, ambient conditions and validated transport plan together. Include unknown intervals when reporting to the person responsible for product disposition.

Treat backup transfer as conditional. For a backup vehicle, container or cold room, verify usable capacity, actual temperature, product compatibility, restraint, access, logger and transfer time beforehand. For a passive container, plate preparation, contact with the product and time after transfer must match the validated pack-out. Without preparation and capacity records, the backup is not ready.

Keep these details on accessible cards or records:

  • unit make, model, serial number and manual access
  • warnings for stopping or securing the vehicle and unit
  • first service contact, backup person and quality decision owner
  • independent logger identity, last good record and product quantity/location
  • verified backup vehicle, container or cold-room capacity and temperature check

Handover and closure

Record service recovery and product disposition separately under the same incident number. Restored operation does not automatically release the load. Preserve the record before clearing codes; follow the model instructions and authorised service guidance for reset or restart.
